Gambling Research & Policy Initiative (GRPI)



The Gambling Research & Policy Initiative (GRPI) is housed within the Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology with the overall goal to conduct research on gambling awareness, behavior, risk, and gambling-related harms, including regular North Carolina gambling behavior and risk prevalence studies, state/national/international studies focused on marginalized groups, and other studies aimed at filling research gaps.  

Some current GRPI Projects include a focus on the following:


Gambling Treatment Diversion Courts (GTDC)

Provide the most up-to-date empirical research and insight to any jurisdiction looking to establish diversion programs for individuals accused of gambling-motivated crimes

  • Clark County Gambling Treatment Diversion Court (GTDC) Evaluation
  • Recommendations and Gold Standards for Gambling Treatment Diversion Courts
  • International Comparative Analysis of Gambling-Motived Crime and Criminal Justice Systems[lead authorship]
  • Ongoing consultation with Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Gambling Assessment & Treatment among Individuals on Probation/Parole


Voluntary Self-Exclusion (VSE)

Provide the most up-to-date information on access, procedures, and effectiveness of voluntary self-exclusion with user-friendly web-based resources for anyone wanting to self-exclude or needing more understanding on the process

Current projects:

  • National Study of The Relationship Between Gambling-Type Legality and Gambling Self-Exclusion Opportunities by State 
  • National Study of the Use and Effectiveness of Voluntary Self-Exclusion
  • Development of com resource which will include detailed user-friendly guidance on the current state of VSE in the U.S. and the most up-to-date links for individuals to access VSE information and forms [currently under construction, anticipated launch in summer, 2024]
